Socceroos captain Lucas Neill could be on his way to Europe if West Ham don't make him an improved offer in a week.
Socceroos and West Ham captain Lucas Neill will start talking to other clubs if the Hammers do not make him an improved offer in a week, his management said.
Neill, 31, and his east London club are at loggerheads after the experienced defender rejected the club’s offer of a new contract.
His old contract expired on June 7.
Neill, who played his 50th match for Australia against Japan in Melbourne in June and who was one of the Socceroos' key players in their qualification for a second straight World Cup finals, is nearing the end of his career and he wants to know as soon as possible where he is going to be playing next season.
Especially with the World Cup in South Africa coming up in just under a year.
“We will wait one week for West Ham to get back to us and if we hear nothing we will have to open dialogue with the interested parties from Britain and the continent,” Neill's agent Paddy Dominguez said.
“Lucas would love to stay with the club and his young family is settled in London.
“But he has perhaps two top-class seasons left in his career and he certainly wants to know where he will be playing next season.
“Pre-season training will start soon and that is why we want an answer from West Ham as soon as possible. This is a big factor.”
Neill, who grew up on Sydney’s northern beaches, left Australia for Britain in 1995 as an ambitious 17-year-old footballer with stars in his eyes.
He went on to make a magnificent career in one the world’s biggest leagues, playing for 14 seasons in England with Millwall, Blackburn and West Ham.
However the time might have come for him to move on and take on “a new challenge”, Dominguez said.
Neill is excited by the prospect of playing on the continent, where he has been linked with Istanbul giants Galatasaray, fellow Socceroo Harry Kewell’s club.
“Galatasaray are interested and they have been since last January,” Dominguez said.
“But this is not about money. Lucas is open minded about the whole thing. If he eventually leaves the Hammers he would want to sign for a club that will challenge for silverware and be in a position to play in the Champions League.
“Lucas has been in the game for a long time and he would like to finish with a trophy or two.”
